Snorrastaðir

Snorrastaðir

Five year-round cottages at farm Snorrastaðir in West Iceland, located where the Borgarfjörður region and Snæfellsnes peninsula meet. The farm is close to Eldborg volcanic crater, a natural reserve, as well as Löngufjörur beach, ever popular with riders. The landscapes, formed by fire and ice, varied hiking routes and the proximity to Snæfellsjökull National Park make this an area well worth the visit.

Open all year.

Varied hiking routes. The nearest golf courses are by Borgarnes (Hamarsvöllur, 38 km / 23.5 mi), a popular 18-hole course, and at Langaholt (55 km / 34 mi), a fun course with challenging hazards. The nearest town is Borgarnes (38 km / 23 mi), where you will find a good swimming pool, shops and supermarkets, museums and various tourism services. There’s also a good pool in town Stykkishólmur (65 km / 40 mi), as well as shops and various activities. For whale watching tours, head to Ólafsvík (70 km / 43.5 mi), where Sæferðir offer a range of interesting tours.

Eldborg – art by lava

Many consider Eldborg, a protected site since 1974, the most beautifully shaped crater in Iceland. A scoria crater, it stands 60 metres above the surrounding lava field. The elliptic crater is 200 metres in diameter and 50 metres deep (656 ft. and 164 ft. respectively), and probably erupted during the early 10th century. Walking is the easiest way to reach Eldborg from Snorrastaðir, and the route is about 2.5 km (1.5 mi). It’s possible to hike all the way up to the edge of the crater, and then circumnavigate it.

Gerðuberg and Snæfellsjökull glacier

Start a day tour to the Snæfellsnes peninsula by stopping at Gerðuberg –oddly symmetrical columnar basalt (13 km / 8 mi). The drive along the peninsula’s southern shore is quite fun, and Snæfellsjökull is in full view ahead, enigmatically pulling you toward it. Plan to spend the better part of your trip at the Snæfellsjökull National Park (85 km /53 mi), where you’ll find marked hiking trails around nature’s unforgettable adventure land.

Tours around Borgarfjörður – Stykkishólmur

Snorrastaðir is ideally located to tour either the southern Borgarfjörður region (Deildartunguhver, Hraunfossar, Reykholt, and the Settlement Centre) or the northern Snæfellsnes peninsula, where you’ll find the beautiful town Stykkishólmur (65 km / 40 mi), situated by the fjord Breiðafjörður. There, you’ll find interesting museums, like the Volcano Museum, or you can explore the fjord by boat.
