From Egilsstaðir we head towards the fairly isolated and very beautiful East fjords. Apart from the highlands this is the most sparsely populated area of Iceland with only about 3% of the total population living on the farms and small fishing villages of the area. Here we make our way between the rugged mountains and the endless ocean watching the breathtaking scenery of cascading waterfalls coming down steep cliff sides and small rivers flowing into the narrow fjords that open towards the North Atlantic.

Overnight stay in the fishing village Höfn.

Not far from Höfn is the Glacier Lagoon Jökulsárlón. Great icebergs break off the main glacier and float in the lagoon taking on strange abstract shapes of white and blue then floating out sea some breaking further down to scatter along the Diamond Beach. The bus trip continues further on to National Park Skaftafell. It is a beautiful, green oasis at the root of the massive glacier Vatnajökull crowned by Hvannadalshnjúkur, the highest peak in Iceland. We continue past lava fields of Eldhraun and observe the black glacial deposits at Mýrdalssandur. We continue to the area of Vík with its black sand beaches and landscape shaped by the massive volcanoes of Katla and Eyjafjallajökull. We also visit the two breathtaking waterfalls of Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss.

Overnight stay at Selfoss.

First visit of the day is to the majestic Gullfoss, one of Iceland’s most beautiful waterfalls. Next stop is at the geothermal area around Geysir. Here we experience the active geyser Strokkur which erupts every five minutes a high column of boiling hot water. It truly is a fascinating phenomena. Continuing to the National Park and Rift Valley of Þingvellir, where we can see the edges of the tectonic plates as well as the site where the oldest parliament still in function was founded by the viking settlers in 930AD. From Þingvellir we drive on to Reykjavik.
