Staff Recycles Organic Waste

Staff Recycles Organic Waste

02.07.2014 | María Reynisdóttir

As an Vakinn certified organisation and as part of our sustainability policy, we are constantly taking steps to reduce our environmental footprint.

Recycling waste has long been a priority at the Hey Iceland office. We already had an extensive recycling system for paper, plastic, cartons, metals, cans and glass when we launched a successful recycling programme for organic waste (leftovers of fruits and vegetables, coffee grounds etc) in 2012.

Last winter we decided to take a step further and let staff bring their own organic waste from home to make better use of our recycling programme. Currently only companies in Reykjavík, not households, can have their organic waste picked up for recycling so this way we can save numerous car rides by staff to the recycling centre.

The project has been a success and we now recycle on average 85 kg of organic waste from staff households each month!

Our extensive recycling system that all of our staff are trained to use – those who do so incorrectly receive a friendly telling-off from our Director Sævar!
