Experience the Settlement Period Farm of Eirik the Red and Leif Eiriksson
At Eiriksstaðir visitors are invited to sit by the fire in a Viking longhouse, where knowledgeable historians share insights into life in the 10th century and the origins of the Sagas that began in Iceland.
While the country is famous for its Viking heritage, few places offer a true glimpse into the everyday lives of the early settlers. At Eiríksstaðir, guests can explore the fascinating realities of life on the fringes of the known world and the epic stories of the family who built the original longhouse in the 900s. Inside a fully furnished replica, standing beside the ruins of the original structure, guests can sit by the fire, listen to the Sagas as they were originally told, and experience the sights, sounds, and smells of life over a thousand years ago. They will learn about the significant roles women played in managing the household and farm, as well as the ingenious survival strategies people devised to thrive in a land with limited resources.
