Entering a New World: Snorkelling in Silfra

Entering a New World: Snorkelling in Silfra

On a Sunday afternoon last autumn three of our staff members, Lísa, Jóhanna and Hrund headed out to Þingvellir National Park to go snorkelling in Silfra with Arctic Adventures. Below, sales representative Hrund describes the experience and shows us some incredible photos taken during the trip!

Silfra is known to be one of the best dive sites in the world. It is actually a fissure between the Eurasian and North American continents. When you dive or snorkel there you are right where the continental plates meet. The underwater visibility in Silfra can be over 100 metres on a bright day, which is very unique.

None of us had ever been snorkelling or diving in Silfra before, so we had no idea of what to expect. From the riverbank it looked like just a very normal Icelandic river with a bunch of people floating around, but as soon as we got in and started to snorkel we entered a new world!

This particular afternoon the visibility was not so good due to the lack of sunshine, something that can simply never be guaranteed in Iceland! Still, we were able to see a lot. We were completely amazed by the view and couldn’t imagine how it could get any better…

We enjoyed the magnificent underwater landscape so much as we floated down with the lazy current that none of us could bring ourselves to look up from the water.

It is wonderful to feel so weightless as you float surrounded by beautiful nature. So peaceful. The water in Silfra is also so fresh and pure that you can even drink from it anytime while snorkelling!

The water was quite cold that day and it usually is, but we wore dry suits that the Arctic Adventure crew provided us with that kept us warm. The only cold we could feel was on our faces and hands, but we got used to it very fast.

Overall, a wonderful experience that I highly recommend!
