Árnanes V

Árnanes V

A cosy country hotel by the Ring Road in the southeast of Iceland, by Hornafjörður fjord close to Vatnajökull – the largest glacier in Europe. Many consider Hornafjörður to be the most charming and beautiful regions in Iceland. There is a grand view over mountains and glaciers, which is unmatched on a bright day. Behind the mountaintops the enchanting and icy world of Vatnajökuls awaits, and the heavy din of the ocean waves can be heard as they come in from the south, where they land on the black sands.

The kingdom of glaciers and dwellings of birds

Árnanes is centrally located in a green and giving countryside, where neighbours include glacial rivers and the magical and icy world of Vatnajökull glacier. 40 km away (25 mi), organized excursions on either super jeeps or snowmobiles depart. In the town Höfn, guests will find an interesting glacier exhibition, located in the same house as the tourist information centre. There are many and varied hiking routes in the region, over mountains and through valleys by the southern edge of Vatnajökull national park. Some routes are lined with informational signs. The shore by Höfn is a protected nature reserve and birdlife is rich, where more trails and hiking routes are to be explored, also including information on signs at selected locations.

Jökulsárlón Lagoon in Breiðamerkursandur

The world-famous Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon is about an hour’s drive west from Árnanes (75 km / 46.6 mi). The route passes the southern foothills of Vatnjökull, and winds through grand landscapes and the harbour-free south coast. It is a charming area to explore for those interested in magnificent nature, hikes and mountain climbing. Boat rides on the lagoon are offered.

The beautiful Lón and Skaftafell national park

The region north of Hornafjörður is known as Lón (30 km / 18.6 mi from Árnanes). A great selection of hiking routes through prime landscapes, either by the shore, through narrow valleys or in the mountains. The Ring Road passes through Lón. The national park Skaftafell is 116 km (72 mi) west of Árnanes and (50 km / 31 mi) from Jökulsárlón.
