The bird lover‘s Paradise
Laxárbakki is situated by Laxá River in an area that was declared a nature reserve in 1994 and later the only certified important marsh (Ramsarsvæði) in Iceland adjacent to sea. The area sees many species of birds on their way to and from nesting grounds in Greenland and Canada. Many shorebirds live in the marsh and Laxá is a popular salmon river.
Many hiking trails
The area offers many interesting hiking trails, both easy and more challenging. Easy hike to Laxfoss Waterfall 1500 metres from the hotel. Little further you will find other waterfalls worth checking out. Other more challenging hiking trails like the hike to Glymur Waterfall, Síldarmannagötur trail and paths from Háihnúkur Mountain or Geirmundartindur peak in Akrafjall Mountain. Avid hikers can set their course on Heiðarhorn peak on Skarðsheiði Mountain (1,053 m).
