The hotel serves a varied breakfast. Liquor license. Reception and a hall that sits 50, located in a separate house a stone’s throw away from the main house.
Service and recreation
There is a hot tub by the guesthouse. Fishing permits are sold at the reception (trout fishing in lake Sauðlauksdalsvatn, 17 km / 10.5 mi). Horse rental. A number of hiking trails. A district museum at Hnjót (5 km / 3 mi). A nine-hole golf course near the head of the fjord, on the north side (Vesturbotnsvöllur, 30 km / 18.6 mi). The nearest town is Patreksfjörður, where you will find shops, a swimming pool and various services (40 km / 25 mi).
Midnight sun at the edge of the world
The guesthouse is located in Örlygshöfn, which is a beautiful valley in rather grand surroundings on the southern shore of fjord Patreksfjörður. This fjord is the southernmost fjord of the West Fjords. If you walk 5 – 10 minutes, you will reach a beautiful 3-kilometre-long white sand beach, where you can enjoy an evening stroll under the slanting rays of the midnight sun.
The Hnjót District Museum – mountain and creek hikes
If you travel further along the fjord, you’ll come across the unique Hnjót District Museum, where you can learn about people’s day-to-day struggles and survival. Hikers have a lot to choose from, like shore hikes to neighbouring creeks, or mountain hikes. Some trails are ancient highways, marked by cairns.
Látrabjarg and Rauðisandur
Látrabjarg (25 km / 15.5 mi) is a famous cliff and home to Europe’s largest bird colony. The 14-km-long cliff (9 mi) stands 444 metres above sea level at its highest point. Millions of seabirds nest here, and sometimes up to 40% of a specie’s entire population (this is true of the razorbill, for example). Until last century, locals would take to the cliff to capture birds and claim their eggs, but now, Látrabjarg attracts tourists, birdwatchers and nature lovers alike. Close to Hotel Látrabjarg is village Rauðisandur (35 km / 22 mi), another interesting and beautiful spot. It’s a grown and welcoming area by a red-ish seashell beach.
The Southern West Fjords – Dynjandi waterfall
You can easily go on a day tour by car and tour the southern fjords of the region. You could for example drive over to Arnarfjörður fjord, from Patreksfjörður via Tálknafjörður, and to seaside village Bíldudalur. The southern route along Arnarfjörður and to valley Selárdalur is lined with unforgettable nature, and the northern route will take you to the magnificent waterfall Dynjandi.
