Kaldbakur - Evening walk hiking tour
Explore an area affected by two of the largest lava eruptions since Iceland was inhabitated (approx. 870); the volcanic eruption in Eldgjá in 934 and the volcanic eruption in Laki in 1783. Ash from active volcanoes in the vicinity, such as Katla, Grímsvötn and Öræfajökull, have had an immense impact on the region throughout the years, the latest being the volcanic eruption in Grímsvötn in 2011.

You will also gain a unique insight into Kirkjubæjarklaustur‘s long and intriguing history through getting to know place names and and stumbling across interesting local characters of times gone by such as monks, nuns, inventors and artists.



Period: 12 July – 5 August – Daily at 21:00.

Location: Tour starts from Guesthouse Klausturhof in Kirkjubæjarklaustur.

Length: Approx. 2 hour walk, 2 km.

Price: 13 EUR – free of charge for children 16 years and younger.

Difficulty level: Fairly easy walk, slow walking with frequent stops.
