Round up in September

One of the biggest events of the year in the Icelandic countryside is the sheep round-up - "réttir", which takes

place in September all over the country. After running free in nature all summer, people on horses head out to find the sheep which are then gathered to a fold where they‘re sorted out by farms to which they belong. Not only farmers participate, but also people from the city and elsewhere who like to get away from their daily routines and experience some country action and nurture their Icelandic roots in this special tradition.
Everyone is welcome to come and take part in the action during the day and the celebration at night after the gathering is over.
If you are travelling to Iceland in the fall, this event would be a great addition to your trip, giving you a firsthand experience of an Icelandic tradition that hasn‘t changed in centuries! We recommend renting a car and staying in farmhouse accommodation or country hotels. Whether you are going on a leisurely or express tour around Iceland, travelling with family, friends or a partner, it would definitely be worth your time to
witness this unique event.
