Beautiful landscape with a rich history

Vogur is situated in a pretty countryside of wild scrubs and the area is pleasant for walks whether in summer or winter. A short drive east from Vogur leads you to an area where important events in one of the best known Icelandic Sagas, Laxdæla Saga, took place.

Natural hot spring pool and elf dwelling

An excellent natural hot spring swimming pool is located some 30 km east of Vogur in Sælingsdalur Valley. Nearby Tungustapi hill is an important elf dwelling according to Icelandic folklore. Búðardalur village is just a short drive away from the swimming pool, with convenience shops and the usual services.

In the footsteps of Viking explorers

If you drive a few km south of Búðardalur you will arrive at Haukadalur Valley where the Eiríksstaðir Museum is located. There, you can enter a reconstructed Viking-age longhouse, a replica of the former home of ‘Eric the Red‘ whose son ‘Leif the Lucky‘ is believed to have been the first European to discover North America around the year 1000 (open June, July and August). The distance from Vogur to the main road leading to the Westfjords, along Hvammsfjörður fjord, is 35 km.
