Day 1 | Vikings, Snæfellsnes Peninsula and Icelandic horses

Pick-up at your hotel in Reykjavík between 8:30 and 9:00. We start with a hands-on introduction to your vehicle, a 4x4 modified Land Rover Defender, before taking off northbound through a tunnel underneath Iceland’s legendary Hvalfjörður ('whale fjord'). En-route stop at the Settlement Centre in the town of Borgarnes for an introduction to the first settlers in Iceland, the Vikings. We then head to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula to visit the family at Hrísdalur horse farm for an introduction to the history and special talents of the Icelandic horse, followed by coffee and light refreshments.

We continue along the peninsula to the family-run Guesthouse Langaholt where we will stay for the next 3 nights. In the evening the chef will prepare a special welcome dinner.

We then walk to the black volcanic beach of Djúpalónssandur for the ultimate stone-lifting ‘Viking test’.

Afternoon get-together in the lounge at Guesthouse Langaholt for a picture show from the first 2 days of the tour. Dinner followed by some local entertainment and an evening chat with the family.

TripAdvisor reviews

These people are great! I have been bringing small groups of students to Iceland for the past decade as part of field studies of environments and the people who live in them. Hey Iceland (AKA Icelandic Farm Holidays) has provided us with amazing places to stay around the island that have met the needs we had perfectly. They are informative and accommodating and really understand the uniqueness of each of the farmhouse/ guesthouse/ accommodations they represent. Highly recommended for newbies headed to Iceland but also for those who have been to Iceland and have ventured beyond the Golden Circle.
