Snæfellsnes Peninsula in Iceland is known for its spectacular scenery and the majestic and mystical Snæfellsjökull Glacier. More importantly though, it is also home to one of Iceland’s best trail races (voted best in 2016). This is a 22 km long run that spans the south coast of the peninsula, across a mountain range, and over to the north coast. You will be running on gravel roads, next to a glacier that is also an active volcano, up and down steep hills, past bright white blankets of snow, to finish in a lovely and idyllic fishing village for some well-earned refreshments.

Itinerary

Friday | Heading for Snæfellsnes peninsula

Pick-up at your hotel in Reykjavík. Our course is set on Snæfellsnes with a stop in Akranes for a chilly and refreshing foot-bath in the ocean. When we reach Snæfellsnes we will hike the stunning Eldborg Crater before heading to our accommodation. Optional short run along the beach before dinner.

Saturday | Snæfellsnes Trail Run

This is it. Running day. Transfer to Arnarstapi village where the race starts. Light refreshment in Ólafsvík after the run is provided and we recommend a warm and refreshing soak in the hot tub at the local swimming pool. As we head back to our accommodation with one or two short stops on the way.

Sunday | Þingvellir run

If you are feeling pumped you have the option to run from Hvalfjörður Fjord over Leggjarbrjótur Trail to Þingvellir National Park.

Sunday | Geysir & Gullfoss

Today we leave Snæfellsnes Peninsula and head towards the popular Golden Circle. Þingvellir has great importance in Iceland´s history and is also a geological wonder. Next stop is the Laugarvatn Fontana SPA where you can have a warm and stress-releasing soak before visiting the renowned Gullfoss Waterfall and Geysir Hot Spring area.

Monday | Friðheimar greenhouse and hot spring run

Morning stop at Friðheimar farm and greenhouse to learn about how Icelanders harness volcanic energy to grow delicious greeneries and taste their luscious tomatoes.

Monday | Guided trail running tour in Reykjadalur

Next up is Hveragerði, a village situated on a geothermal zone. We will go for an energizing run in the Reykjadalur Valley with the possibility of a dip in the natural hot river running through the valley. We end the run at Hveragerði swimming pool for a bathe before returning to Reykjavík where we drop you off at your hotel.
