Arrival day | Reykjanes Peninsula

You are met at Keflavík International Airport and transferred to your hotel in Reykjavík upon your arrival. If you wish, you can also pick up your rental car one day early at the airport (not included) and explore Reykjanes Peninsula on your way to your accommodation. Reykjanes is very geothermally active and here you will find mud pools and steam vents, Brimketill lava rock pool and Hafnarberg sea cliffs. You might also want to walk the Bridge Between Two Continents, a small footbridge connecting two tectonic plates.

Day 1 | Borgarfjörður area, West Iceland

Drive along the beautiful Hvalfjörður fjord and tour Borgarfjörður district, the site of one of the most popular Icelandic sagas, Egil's Saga. Visit Hraunfossar and Barnafossar falls, the powerful Deildartunguhver hot spring and historic Reykholt, the former home of Snorri Sturluson - one of Iceland's most famous poets and writers from the middle ages.

Day 2 | Snæfellsnes Peninsula, West Iceland

The diversity of the landscape and geology of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula is unique. Explore the Eldborg Crater, visit the little black church at Búðir, Arnarstapi harbour, the pebbled beach at Djúpalónssandur and the mystical Snæfellsjökull glacier. As you travel along Snæfellsnes, make sure to visit Grundarfjörður village with its stunning view of Kirkjufell mountain and the pretty village of Stykkishólmur with its old timber houses. From there you can take a boat trip around Breiðafjörður Bay.

Day 3 | Westfjords and the Northwest

Explore Strandir, the Westjords' easternmost extremities and one of the least-visited corners of Iceland. Enjoy the dramatic scenery of an area known for sorcery and sheep farming. From there you will head on to Hvammstangi village and the beautiful Húnaflói area.

Day 4 | The Northwest and Akureyri

Explore the majestic Hvítserkur Cliff off Vatnsnes Peninsula - seals can often be seen basking around on the beaches. Tour the Skagafjörður area, known for its horse breeding. Visit the farmhouse museum at Glaumbær and the old turf church at Víðimýri. End the day in charming Akureyri town – often nicknamed the 'Capital of the North'. If you have time, we also recommend a drive along the beautiful Tröllaskagi peninsula, an area of spectacular natural beauty.

Day 5 | The North - Lake Mývatn

View the beautiful Goðafoss Waterfall ('Waterfall of the Gods'). Continue to the Lake Mývatn area and explore its many impressive sights including Dimmuborgir lava fields and the geothermal area at Námafjall. Relax in the milky blue waters of the Nature Baths and enjoy an impressive view over the rugged surrounding landscape.


Day 6 | The Northeast - Tjörnes Peninsula

Húsavík with its colourful timber houses and unique museums is the whale-watching capital of Iceland. Go whale watching and see whales in their natural habitat (limited in winter). Visit Tjörnes peninsula, known for its dense population of ptarmigan and abundant fossil, and explore the woodlands and tuff mountains of Öxarfjörður area.

Day 7 | The East - Egilsstaðir

The town of Egilsstaðir lies by Lake Lagarfljót where the sea serpent 'Lagarfljótsormur' allegedly lives. Explore the numerous places of interest around the lake including Hengifoss Waterfall, Hallormsstaður forest and Skriðuklaustur Centre of Culture and History.


Day 8 | The Eastfjords

Drive along the Eastfjords with their dramatic mountain scenery and quaint fishing villages. Discover Reyðarfjörður and Fáskrúðsfjörður and enjoy the scenery of Skrúður Island. Continue southwards to Höfn, known for its delicious lobster.

Day 9 | Vatnajökull National Park

Admire the vast Vatnajökull Glacier as you drive along the Southeast coast. Cruise between the towering icebergs at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and take an unusual tour to Cape Ingólfshöfði on a hay wagon. Enjoy the glacier vistas and many walking and hiking possibilities at Skaftafell nature resort.

Day 10 | The South Coast

Visit the beautifully located Kirkjubæjarklaustur village. Continue to Vík village and visit Dyrhólaey, a 120 m high cape and nature sanctuary with perpendicular cliffs teeming with birds. Stop at Skógar with its magnificent waterfall Skógafoss and Skógar folk museum. Admire - or even walk behind - the beautiful Seljalandsfoss Waterfall.
