Itinerary

Day 1 | The South

Welcome to Iceland! Pick up your rental car at Keflavík airport upon arrival and start your journey at the Blue Lagoon (depending on your arrival time), a temple of relaxation and a place of sheer beauty, located only 20 minutes from the airport. After a soothing bath, continue towards Reykjavík, Iceland’s vibrant capital city, bustling with restaurants, cosy cafés, museums, making for an exciting night. You can also head straight to the countryside where you will be based for the next 3 nights.

Day 2 | The South

Today, embark on the famous 'Golden Circle' Route, starting with Þingvellir National Park, marking the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, and Öxarárfoss Waterfall, partly frozen in this season. Visit one of Iceland’s most beloved waterfall, Gullfoss, plummeting down into a 70-meter high rugged canyon. Head towards Geysir hot spring area, and its main attraction, Strokkur, an active geyser blasting water to heights of 20 meters every 10 minutes. Drive across the vast farmlands of the South Coast, with a stop at the magnificent waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss.

Day 3 | The South

Start the day with a fun and educational visit to Skógar Folm Museum and the Eyjafjallajökull Visitor Centre (must be booked in advance). Soak up the panoramic views from Dyrhólaey promontory and its iconic arch, followed with a walk along the stunning Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach. Continue to Vatnajökull National Park, home to the precious Skaftafell Nature Resort, the starting point to a wide range of hiking tracks leading to glaciers tongues and Svartifoss Waterfall. Admire the icebergs slowly drifting at Jökulsárlón and ending their trip at Diamond Beach. A sunset there won’t leave you unmoved.

Day 4 | The West

Retrace your steps and take the road West, in the direction of Borgarfjörður area, with a first stop to the Hraunfossar and Barnafossar Waterfalls, whose extraordinary hues of blue will dazzle you. Listen to Nature at Europe’s most powerful hot spring, Deildartunguhver, before reaching Reykholt, one of Iceland’s most historical places and home to an old geothermal pool, Snorralaug. Alternatively, take a detour to the mystical Snæfellsnes Peninsula, where black sand beaches, snowy peaks, narrow canyons and quaint fishing towns will delight you.

Day 5 | The North

Time to head North towards Akureyri for a very contrasted landscape. Explore Vatnsnes Peninsula, where you will spot colonies of seals basking in the Sun and get to visit a petrified troll in Hvítserkur. We recommend a visit to the Glaumbær Folk Museum, a sumptuous reminder of turf building skills in Iceland. Nearby, Hofsós Swimming Pool is built on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Greenland Sea and snow-covered mountain ranges, the promise of an unforgettable experience. Skagafjörður is known as the cradle of the Icelandic horse so you might want to go on a horseback riding tour there!

Day 6 | The North

Feel the atmosphere of Akureyri, Iceland’s 2nd biggest city, rich of art museums, lively cafés, an enchanting botanical garden and geothermal swimming pools. Marvel at Goðafoss, the Waterfall of the Gods, before heading to Lake Mývatn Area, where countless natural wonders await, from Grjótagjá Lava Cave and Dimmuborgir interesting lava formations, to Krafla Crater and Hverir Geothermal Field. Unwind and gaze at the northern lights from the warm waters of Mývatn Nature Baths, set in the most magical scenery.

Day 7 | The North

Visit Ásbyrgi, the Guardian of the North, a gigantic and impressive horseshoe-shaped rock formation. Feel the power at Dettifoss Waterfall, the most powerful in Europe in terms of volume. Reach Iceland’s Capital of whale watching Húsavík (available til November in winter), a charming fishing harbour, and excellent terrain for cross-country skiing and northern lights spotting. We recommend a visit to the recently open Geothermal Sea Baths.
