Itinerary

Day 1 | Bakkagerði

After dinner go for a pleasant walk around the charming and beautifully located small fishing village of Bakkagerði.

Accommodation in the Borgarfjörður Eystri area.

Day 2 | Hike to Brúnavík Bay

Several marked hiking trails and day tours are available but we especially recommend a hike to Brúnavík Bay. Begin your day hike by the harbour in Borgarfjörður Eystri and observe the puffins and other seabirds from a mere two metres‘ (6.5 ft.) distance. Head for the stunningly beautiful Brunavík inlet through vegetated mountain screes (345 m/1,132 ft.). Enjoy walking barefoot on the black beach with its soft stones and listen to the waves. After crossing Hofstrandarskarð pass (321 m/1,053 ft.) walk along the colourful canyon Helgárgil back towards Bakkagerði village.

Distance: 13 km/8 mi.
Elevation gain: 700 m/2,297 ft.

Accommodation in the Borgarfjörður Eystri area.

Day 3 | Hike to Stórurð

Again there are several options to choose from; however our recommendation for the day is a hike in the Stórurð area which is by some considered to be Iceland‘s best kept secret. Hike Mt. Geldingafjall (640 m/2,100 ft.) and continue to the west of Súlur peak from where you have an excellent view of the surrounding area, even all the way to Vatnajökull Glacier. The turquoise-coloured basins of icy water among the huge boulders are simply magnificent. Enjoy the easy hike along the Dyrfjöll mountains back down to the valley.

Distance: 18 km/11 mi.
Elevation gain: 600 m/1,969 ft.

Accommodation in the Borgarfjörður Eystri area.

If you want to explore more you can easily continue hiking in the area or you can continue your travels around Iceland.

TripAdvisor reviews

Excellent Experience! We used Hey Iceland for our honeymoon and absolutely loved it! It took the guess work out of having to figure out where to stay, what to do, etc. I have recommended them to friends and family and will happily recommend them to anyone else. They clearly know what they are doing!
