Two Rivers Trail | Wilderness Center - East

Two Rivers Trail | Wilderness Center - East

Embark on an action-packed two-day adventure into the wild showcasing a scenic range of canyons, waterfalls, woods of birch, valleys, historic sites, and the two opposites glacial river Jökulsá and spring-fed river Kelduá, both spectacular. Admire the Icelandic horse’s friendliness, sure-footedness, and adaptability no matter the terrain, as they carry provisions during the trek. A well-balanced mix of tranquil hiking into the highlands and more adventurous moments, such as a river crossing aboard a traditional cable ferry. On the trek, no other human in sight, only reindeers! Available in Summer.

Itinerary

Previous Evening

Bear in mind: The trip departure and arrival point is the Wilderness Center. It is recommended to stay at or near the Wilderness Center tonight, as departure is scheduled for early morning tomorrow.

Meeting up at the Wilderness Center, for a pleasant dinner and evening with the group, where your guide tells you about the highlights of local history and Nature features.

Day 1

Once the horses are packed with provisions, you leave the Wilderness Center and soon reach the abandoned farm of Kleif, where tales and stories from the past await you. You then hop on a cableway to cross the Jökulsá river and hike along the Jökulsá canyon, home to numerous breathtaking waterfalls, the highest ones being Faxi and Kirkjufoss. You spend the evening and night by an old shepherd’s hut at Hrakströnd, at the heart of magnificent mountains, to the sound of the Hrakstrandarfoss falls.

Day 2

Today you head North East across the tranquil area of Mount Múlinn, far from civilization. The hike provides scenic views over the valleys Þorgerðarstaðadalur and Suðurdalur. The contrast with yesterday’s landscapes is striking: wherereas Jökulsá glacial river is carrying the sediment out to sea, in a rather muddy water, Kelduá spring-fed river water is incredibly clear. The next part of the hike takes you through a birchwood, past the ruins of ancient sheds and pens, and along the slopes of Mount Kiðafell, until the Sturluflöt farm, from which you are driven back to the Wilderness Center.
