Accommodation
Four small cottages by Syðri-Rauðalækur Farm. Each cottage is 30 m2 and sleeps two people double or twin beds (a third bed can be added). Each cottage has a private bathroom, kitchenette, and a seating area. The cottages are nicely built, bright and spacious, with large windows and stunning views.
Board
Nordic breakfast buffet, homemade bread and delicious coffee. Breakfast is served between 08:00 and 10:00. Each cottage has facilities for cooking simple meals and brew coffee or tea. The nearest super markets are in Hella (7 km), Hvolsvöllur (20 km) and Selfoss (33km). Nice restaurants in Hella, Árhús and Hotel Stracta (Bistro and Restaurant Garður).
Service and recreation
The hosts are very knowledgeable about the area and the southern part of the Highlands and are more than willing to share information and recommendations. Fun hiking paths are on the farm land. Horse rental on the next farm. Good swimming pools in Hella, Hvolsvöllur and Selfoss. The nearest golf course (18-holes) is midway between Hella and Hvolsvöllur. The nearest towns are Hella, Hvolsvöllur and Selfoss.
The Icelandic horse and Northern Lights
The hosts are horse breeders and forest growers. The farm land measures 210 hectares and guests are welcome to roam around the property, get to know the Icelandic horse and enjoy the varied birdlife in summer. On clear winter nights Northern Lights can be seen dancing in the sky.
Volcanoes and the LAVA Centre
Iceland‘s most famous volcanoes, Hekla and Eyjafjallajökull, stand proud in South Iceland and put their majestic mark on the area. This is the perfect playground for those interested in geology and the powerful natural forces that have shaped Iceland. The LAVA Center in Hvolsvöllur (10 min drive) holds an interactive exhibition about the Icelandic volcanoes and is a fun experience for kids and adults alike.
