An adventure in West Iceland and the Westfjords!

An adventure in West Iceland and the Westfjords!

23.03.2016 | Bryndís Pjetursdóttir

I was lucky to be asked to test one of our comprehensive guided tours of West Iceland and the Westfjords. I know a tough job, but someone has to do it! I spent ten days and nine nights exploring, hiking and sleeping surrounded by incredible nature. The tour, a guided tour, has guaranteed departures next summer with English and German guides.

Beautiful West Iceland

I spent the first two days with my guide in West Iceland, driving through the stunning scenery of Borgarfjörður and Snæfellsnes Peninsula, which before this trip was one of my favorite’s spots in Iceland. West Iceland is great to explore with its stunning waterfalls, colorful villages, and history! I was very happy with the first two days as there was a good combination of walking and sightseeing. An option on the tour was to explore inside a glacier, which was truly an adventure as I had never been inside a glacier before!

Spellbound by stunning fjords and endless view

Next up were the Westfjords, which I was especially looking forward to as I know the area less than other parts of Iceland.  We left West Iceland by ferry boat over Breiðarfjörður Bay and spent the night in Ísafjörður town. Day three started with a walk along Látrabjarg cliff, the westernmost point of Iceland, where we enjoyed stunning views. In short the Westfjords are beautiful! I don‘t know what I was most spellbound by, the sparkling fjords, the fishing villages or the quietness.

Otherworldly scenery in the highlands of Iceland

Iceland has often been described as otherworldly, and that is true for Hveravellir Nature Reserve, a geothermal area in the Highlands of Iceland, which greeted us with beautiful scenery of smoking fumaroles and bubbling water holes. The surroundings are spectacular wherever you look but taking in the sights while taking a dip in a geothermal pool is incredible.  We were lucky and got a glimpse of the Northern Lights but I can imagine that the midnight sun would be just as magical.

The tour is fantastic!

What I liked most about the tour was the combination of nature, hiking and taking the time to enjoy the moment and relax in nature. One truly feels small in the quietness of the countryside but after ten days of spectacular sights, your energy and spirit are restored, and you feel ready to take on the world!
